The Westchester Chess School has offered private and group chess instruction to children and adults since 2002. Located in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, The WCS focuses on providing a strong foundation in fundamental chess principles and basic chess tactics.
Students range from absolute beginners to those who regularly compete in tournaments. The WCS runs periodic tournaments sanctioned by the United States Chess Federation. These tournaments give interested students an opportunity to establish a USCF rating.
The WCS encourages students to explore the creative side of chess and helps students improve their visualization skills and their ability to calculate variations. Students who want to compete formally are introduced to chess notation, the use of the chess clock and tournament etiquette.
The WCS was founded by Peter Barkman. Peter has been a chess coach for over ten years and has helped many chess teams succeed at national scholastic championships. He has been an active tournament player for over twenty years.
